The Secret Letter of the GR"A

The following is from page 711 of HaTekufah HaGedolah. I'll translate the part after the letter.

On the outside of the letter is written:

בהיפו"י

למו"צ דק"ק יצ"ו

ויל"פ

בצדקה תכונני

דברו אל י'ש'ר'א'ל'

למ"מ שיבב"א

Inside the letter itself is written:

"יום ג' פ' לך לך. מאלקא רבא קדישא, דשכין שמיה בקרתא קדישא, שלמא רבא ונפישא, לעמיה קדישא ופרישא, ע"י הדא איגרתא קדישא, דהיא זעירא ורבי' פרישא.

אביו שבשאמ נאי בתערמ ותותוצ מארה ללא וללא וימצב ותדוא וי"ח לתקע"בג וילי הכד אוי אמת ואמכם ציון

והאות על זה

According to the tradition it is told in the introduction to the letter that was brought to print (Warsaw 5696) that the GR"A left after him a closed letter with an attached instruction not to open it until 100 years had passed since his death.

When the time came, the letter was opened in the "קלויז" of the GR"A, but no one knew how to decode its secrets. The wise men of the "קלויז" sent a copy of the letter to all the important communities which had mekubalim, so that they would try to decode it. When the letter reached Yerushalayim it was printed in 5658 in the periodical "Torah MiTzion" (3rd year, number 3).

In 5662 it was brought to print by Rav Pesach Cohen Pinfer in his book "The Tradition of the Torah and the Prophets", and on the sides was printed a letter of Rav Shmuel Chaim Luria to the publisher, saying that "the letter of the GR"A is in my hands", and that he got it from the Rada"l. He added that the words of the Rada"l that "there is no man in the world that can write an explanation for this, but in the future Eliyahu will explain it". Rav Pesach was requested himself to try to decode the letter.

The letter was printed again in the introduction to a book "Divrei Eliyahu" of Rav Avraham Dovid Bloch, from the students of "קלויז הגר"א", and also printed and distributed in many forms by Rav Pinchas Arkin from Briansk. Rav Pinchas would say that he knew the secret of the letter, but he said it was forbidden to him to reveal it in Chutz La'Aretz, and therefore he asked that he be assisted to go up to Yerushalayim, there he can reveal the secret. In the days of the gathering of Rabbanim that took place in 5695 in Warsaw, Rav Pinchas arrived to the offices of "Agudas Yisrael" and gave a copy of the letter to Rav Zusha Friedman. But he didn't reveal to him its secret, and he passed away in holiness and purity on the steps of the mikveh in Otbotsk, and the secret, he took with him.

In the year 5696 the letter was brought to press by Rav Y. Dimdus, and he also tried in his powers to achieve the meaning of the letter, saying that the GR"A hinted at the secrets of the Geulah.

On the side of that printing, it was written that in the near future there will be a detailed explanation of the letter, with the agreement of the great mekubalim, at their head Rav Shimon Tzvi Horovitz of Yerushalayim, but nothing is known of this printing.

    Tuesday of parshat Lech Lecha. From the Great and Holy G-d, that dwells his name in the Holy City, much peace, to His holy and reclusive nation, by this holy letter, which is small and (has many explanations?) (is very reclusive?)

    תקע"ב = 5572 which was the year Talmidei HaGR"A re-established the Ashkenazi Yishuv in Yerushalayim, see last page of Kol HaTor chapter 5 part 1.

  6. We had י'ג at 5769/5782 in ע"ב but alternatively, slightly shifted and one year less, 5771/5783 in ת"ק. I was suggesting it could be 5768/5779. That would be 11 years, ס"ג minus ב"ן. If so, check this year, Tuesday of Lech Lecha would be 4 Cheshvan, plus 61 gets 7 Tevet, plus 411 leads to 5 Sh'vat. That is close to what I can understand. Plus 18, it seems to say.

  7. At this stage it still seems unclear. I think we need to understand it in context as well. We should note that this line has 2 words with " in them. Those in particular might be rashei teivot.

    I was just learning Shmuel Aleph perek bet last night, same phrase. It is a sign of fulfillment of the entire thing. So the prior sentence describes a process, the last line describes something at the beginning.

  10. האות is a sign, sure.
    I thought to add that in the line before האות , just about all "words" must be numbers, but one word stands out as an explicitly number, י"ח. The question is why. I tend to think it is not 18. Perhaps it means another number, like two, yud minus chet, similar to לתקע"בג perhaps meaning לפי תקע"ב minus ג.

    The inyan of the אות would be a singular event perhaps, whereas the line before is the big picture.

    I.e. akin to the full secret of the 72 instead of just telling you an event that occurs at 59/60 (or 66).

  13. I would say they are most welcome to post it. The believability factor is there as this quotation from Kol HaTor states that at least 1 or 2 people have figured it out.

    The longer line has a system for understanding time, but the last line is like a singular result for using it. Like presenting General Relativity, and then showing a resultant discovery.

    לפי המובא בזוה"ק פרשת וירא (דף קיז) ובשית מאה שנין לשתיתאה יתפתחון תרעי דחכמתא דלעילא ומבועי דחכמתא לתתא וכו'. ומשנה זו, היינו משנת ת"ר ואזלך מתחיל קול התור באורו של רבנו הגר"א ההולך ואור עד נכון היום. והדבר נרמז גם בסוד מכתב רבנו הסגור בפקודתו לא לפתחו עד עבור מאה שנה היינו שנת עת לחננה לפ"ק.

    I profess a misunderstanding on my part. I had gotten the impression when you said you "had it", that you possessed a peirush that you didn't realize that you had, and therefore my first email indicates this.

    And you didn't mean 66 for תק as much as you meant 506.

    דבר אל ישראל is = 784

    And I caught the typo, it threw me off for a bit, made me get out the sefer.

  27. No apologies necessary. It is quite a giluy, especially the calendar item. I'm not sure there is signifance to that date in 2007 as you suggested though. We are definitely at a new level since Tevet, not sure why that day davka.

  30. Do you have any idea as to the specific meaning of וימצב? Is that a word that existed 200 years ago?

    784 as in (5)784. I don't take that too seriously, many gematriot exist like that.

  33. It would appear to follow the convention of the words that follow and preceed it, though it could be rashei teivot as well. There is no question regarding the 10th of Tevet, but what of the 7th?

  34. I understand what you are saying, but I think the word must describe the development. As I see it, this letter was written so far above sechel that I have no problem with a modern word.

    It could have said 64 days until 10 Tevet and then 410. I think the code is saying this in a hidden way. I would not assign significance to 7 Tevet davka. Rather, I suggest to say that it indicates the time frame in which things changed.

    Did you see that on July 24 2000 they gave up on "peace" in Camp David?

  35. I vevy much remember that period back in 2000. I was still in college, retaking electromagnetism physics (I did much better that time). My teacher's assistant for the lab was an Israeli from Haifa, and we discussed it a lot. I noted at the time that it was as if Hashem had hardened Arafat's (ym"u) heart.

  37. The German professor is the one that made the difference in understanding. Not sure I understand/remember what you mean. I definitely learned the inter-relatedness of the Maxwell equations, but relativity was the next semester. I have a science/technical background, but I am not a learned scientist, I profess.

  38. The understanding of the Jewish professor reveals beauty of the Maxwell equations that manifests itself by writing them in a "relativistically covariant" way. This insight paved the way to both General Relavity and advanced elementary-particle physics.

I am not enough of a Mekubal to understand completely, but it seems to me that the last line of the Igeret is referring to a solution to some sort of mathematical/kabbalistic problem, saying if you understand the prior line, you will be able to solve this riddle. That keeps triggering in my mind something analagous to figuring out how to develop the theory of everything, unifying theory, etc.

    The beauty and wisdom derives from the unity. The Ramchal says this is the purpose of Kabbalah, and you would agree, I'm sure.

  42. You hit the button. Kiddush HaShem of this type is key. Another Kiddush HaShem that is key regards Eretz Yisrael. We must refuse to accept this P state and stop the rebellion. Prophecy will be the reward. (My mail tool does not want to work at this time)

  45. Regarding your pursuit here, perhaps the last line of the letter contains a hint at a certain level of interpretation. The Mem-Beth might refer to 42 years after the Pekida. Then, the Mem-Chet may refer to 48 years after the Pekida. The number 45 can be traced also: בד' מספר כ"ו may mean: In week 4, day 26. In other words, day 5 of week 4.
